Traditional Shamisen Group

ABOUT THE GROUP

Waves of Harmony

Waves of Harmony is a global music initiative that brings together master musicians from Japan and around the world to explore the meeting point of Eastern and Western traditions. Founded in 2020, the project reimagines centuries-old folk music through innovative collaborations, blending Japanese instruments like shamisen with diverse global styles to create a unified, cross-cultural sound.

At its core, Waves of Harmony celebrates both tradition and experimentation. By inviting artists to contribute freely and independently, the project transforms Japanese minyo and other folk genres into fresh, contemporary arrangements that connect cultures while preserving their authenticity. The result is a rich musical dialogue that highlights the expressive power of traditional instruments in a modern, global context.

For this special Atlanta performance, Waves of Harmony presents a focused interpretation of its vision: an intimate, all-shamisen ensemble. Stripping away the broader instrumentation, this performance showcases the depth, versatility, and emotional range of the shamisen alone—offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience the instrument’s full voice within the project’s signature spirit of cultural connection.
